It was a standard first set in England. This made it consistent and allowed postal workers to sort mail quickly. With today's automated machines, the location of the stamp helps orient the envelope for the scanners.
Many envelopes will have a box in the top right corner which says something about the postage. If does not have that, you usually place the stamp in the top right corner of the envelope. If you have issues, then you should go to your Post Office.

Get an address, buy a stamp and envelope, place letter in envelope, lick stamp, place stamp in top right corner of envelope, address written in the middle, return address top left corner. Then put it in the mailbox, preferrably with flag up.
