i think that Hemingway called it old man and the sea is because the sea gave Santiago more of a struggle than the fish. the fish was a parralel to Santiago in that they both had to struggle and fail.i just think the sea was more symbolic than the fish.
The boy is not allowed to fish with the old man because he is no longer seen as lucky due to the old man's recent run of bad luck. The boy's parents have told him to fish on another boat that is more successful.
The boy doesn't go out with the old man because he hasn't caught a fish in 84 days, so the boy's father makes him go on a boat that is luckier and catches more fish.
The opposite of "old man" could be "young man" or "boy."
The old man tells the boy that he will fish with him the next day, knowing that he plans to go out alone. He does this to protect the boy from worrying about him going out in his weakened state.
In The Old Man and the Sea, the boy and the old man pretend that they will go fishing together again, even though the boy's parents forbid him from fishing with the old man due to the old man's recent run of bad luck. Despite being separated at sea, they both hold onto the hope and belief that they will fish together again in the future.
