Why is the term gay reffered to something that isn't?

The term gay was originally used, until well into the mid-20th century, primarily to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy"...Like it was also in the 20th century that it began to be used to imply "immorality"also to label "homosexuals" . Previously that's where it was applied , to people or cats & dogs that were happy!
