Bechet was born in a Creole family in French-speaking New Orleans. He spent a good deal of time playing music in France, where he died and was buried.
The title of Sidney Bechet's 'Petite Fleur' is in French because it is a nod to Bechet's French heritage and the influence of French culture on his music. Additionally, using French in the title added a touch of sophistication and elegance to the composition, reflecting the style and mood of the piece.
