The 2004 straight-to-DVD movie, The Lion King 1½ was released internationally under the title The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata. There was no specific reason as to 'why' the title was changed, it was simply released under a different title despite having nothing to do with advancing the story from the first two films.

∙ 6y agoThe movie stars Timon & Pumba and what was going on in their lives before & after they met Simba and the events in The Lion King. So because the movie takes place during the same span of time as The Lion King it's not a sequel & it's not a prequel so to make it original, they added the ½.

∙ 13y agoThere isn't an official Lion King 3; just The Lion King 1½. In that movie, it explains Timon's origins and how he came to meet Pumbaa. After that, Timon and Pumbaa share their perspective of the original events of The Lion King while it happens.
