For two reasons:
1st it shews that Jesus while he walked the earth was more than just a mere mortal man; he was more than just a prophet or great teacher; the apostles present heard the words from heaven proclaiming "this is my beloved son" or as The Bible later declares the father was in the son Matthew 17:5 & John 14: 10-11
2nd it establishes the fact that there is life; an eternal state after our mortal bodies perish; for the apostles say they saw and heard Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah; both of which died centuries before the incident on the mount occurred
