The tricuspid valve, also known as the atrioventricular valve (AV), is anchored by strong fibers that prevent it from turning inside out. Pressure generated by contractions of ventricles close the AV valves, keeping blood from flowing back into the atria.

Humans have a four chambered heart (two atria on top, one on the left and one on the right) and two ventricles below (one left ventricle and one right ventricle). The atria are connected to the ventricles and separated by the AV (atrioventricular valve). These valves can open and close. When the tricuspid valve opens in a normal person, blood flows from the right atrium to the right ventricle. Once this phase of the heartbeat is complete, the tricuspid valve is supposed to close completely so that blood in the right ventricle does not flow backward into the right atrium (we want blood to flow forward, not backward).
