Up till the early 1960s most lower denominations of US paper money weren't issued as familiar green-seal Federal Reserve Notes. $1 bills were blue-seal silver certificates, $2 bills were red-seal US Notes, $5 bills were issued in all 3 types, and $10 bills were both Federal Reserve Notes and silver certificates.

A new series of Federal Reserve Notes was introduced in 1950, and the other bill types followed three years later. $2 bills were somewhat more frequently used 60 years ago, and they were simply printed along with the other non-FRN bills issued beginning that year:

  • $2 United States Notes
  • $5 silver certificates
  • $5 United States Notes
  • $10 silver certificates
