A number (eg 2) placed AFTER the symbol for an element (H, O and C etc) means that there are that many atoms of that element in the molecule.

Thus H2O means 2 Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom in molecule of Water.

CO2 means there is one Carbon atom and 2 Oxygen atoms in a molecule of Carbon Dioxide.
