The "man" is Britannia and she is holding a trident and olive branch as she has done on the non-commemorative British 50 Pence coins since 1969, until just recently when the reverse designs were changed.

Britannia has always held the trident and shield dating back hundreds of years and she represents Britain's mastery of the seas amongst other things. The symbolism changes with the times.

The olive branch is a return to the design of George III and earlier coins with the traditional gesture of peace by offering the olive branch.
