For the same reason their are numerous letters for any given language. A system of understanding translated into written form, its similar in concept to an alphabet. Its only a theory but what otherwise is their to base it off of? Mathematics, Chemistry, again Linguistics....all of these have multiple symbols for explainitive reasons. Better answers are more than welcome....
