Dogs eat all kinds of indigestible things. A small amount of sand or dirt in the stool occasionally is not a big deal. If it's a *lot* of sand, you might want to consult with a vet, but mostly the sand should pass like any other indigestible thing.

If there is sand in a dog's feces, the dog must have eaten it. Dogs often eat off of the floor while inside, and off the ground while outside. So if a dog kills something outside and eats it, then what they are eating can pick up sand as they drop it. If one or more other dogs become involved, they may fight over the meat, and as the pull at it, they may drag it through some sand.
