Actually, a surprising amount is known about the Christian Church in the years 70 to 300. Not only do we have the New Testament gospels, written during this period, we also have numerous other gospels, epistles and 'apologies' from this early period. We have the writings of such people as Clement of Rome, Tertullian, Ireneus and many others. Christians even communicated their ideas and concerns with some of the Roman emperors. This was a period of prosperity and growth for Christianity and there is evidence of a growing number of small church buildings that supported the many Christian communities.

Some of the history of Christianity from this period belongs to the Gnostic Christians, who were persecuted during the fourth century for refusing to adhere to the teachings of what had become the dominant Christian sect. Because of this, much of their history and their writings were destroyed, leaving only fragments for historians to work with. A fortunate discovery in 1945, at Nag Hammadi in Egypt, uncovered large numbers of Gnostic texts that had been hidden to protect them from the Catholic-Orthodox marauders. We now have a much better idea of the development of Christianity up until the fourth century.

What is the origin of the Catholic religion?

The Christian Church is thought to have started around 30-33 CE in the Near East, probably in Jerusalem. A second-century tradition claims that Peter went to Rome to lead the Church there, but there was already a Christian community in Rome during the time of the apostle Paul, as we can see from his Epistle to the Romans. We do not know the origin of this community but, at this stage, the Roman church was not yet separate from the Church of the east. The Catholic Church, as we know it today, originated from the Great Schism of 1054, when the Christian Church split to form the Catholic Church in the west and the Orthodox Church in the east.
