The controversy isn't over stem cell therapy, it is over embrionic stem cell therapy. Stem cell therapy usually refers to stem cells extracted from the patients own body. Embrionic stem cells are extracted from dead fetuses. Those opposed to embrionic stem cell therapies are worried that it will lead to 'fetus farms', where eggs are fertilized until a fetus is formed, then the fetus is killed to harvest the stem cells. It is an offshoot of the abortion controversy in which the pro-life side largely believes that life begins at conception (egg fertilization).

The controversy around stem cell therapy lies in the research in embryonic stem cells. Some people believe that the start of the embryonic stage is when a human being begins and is therefore unethical to destroy this for the stem cells as it is supposedly akin to murder.

The Truth about Stem Cell Therapy?

m cell therapy is a new and expanding branch of genetic medicine that is based on the premise that introducing new stem cells into damaged tissue can treat a disease or injury. There are many in the medical field that believe that stem cell treatment will revolutionize the manner in which many disease are treated. Medical scientists are currently researching ways to use stem cell therapy to treat Parkinson’s disease, Celiac disease, muscle damage, and Type 1 diabetes, among other diseases. While stem cell therapy is limited at present because of cost and the experimental nature of the treatment, it is predicted that this type of medical treatment with stem cells will become much more common in the future. The most developed, and thus most common, type of stem cell therapy is the use of stem cells to treat leukemia and lymphoma. Stem cell therapy is used to treat the effects of chemotherapy; chemotherapy kills both cancerous cells and also healthy stem cells inside the patient’s bone marrow. Stem cells are introduced in order to replace those haematopoietic stem cells lost during chemotherapy. There are a number of different potential treatments that researchers are looking to incorporate stem cell treatment. One of the areas that looks most promising is in the treatment of brain damage. Brain trauma leads to brain cell death; stem cells may be introduced to replace lost neural stem cells. This treatment is also being researched to replace neural stem cells lost due to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Cancer is another area that looks to have a number of promising applications for stem cell therapy. Researchers have injected neural stem cells into the brains of a variety of different animals to treat cancerous tumors. In some cases, the size fo the cancerous cells were reduced by up to 81 percent, and the new injected stem cells did not turn tumorigenic. The current school of thought is that the key to curing cancer is to inhibit cancer stem cells where the cancer tumor originates in the brain. This method would allow scientists to develop drugs to specifically target cancer cells, rather than the current method in which treatments are designed to kill all cancer cells. This type of targeting would be not only more efficient, but also limit some of the side effects that patients have from current drug treatments.
