Construction was interrupted in 1854 when money ran out and then by the Civil War. When it was restarted, marble from the original quarry was no longer available and had to be sourced from elsewhere.
The Washington Monument, which is one of the tallest free-standing masonary construction is about 555 feet in height. The white marble has different shades in it because it took about 50 years to finish this project (due to civil war, fund shortage etc) and the marble was thus quarried from several different locations like Maryland, Texas and Massachusetts over a large period of time.
