The interior plain we see now is covered with vegetation but not to the extent it was pre glacial.

The glaciers scrubbed all the loose soil and vegetation from the interior plains and it has taken 4,400 years for some areas to be re-covered.

Many desert areas just do not get enough rain to maintain a growth of vegeattion to revitalise the soil so any plants that do spring up after rain lack deep roots and dry out and die off.
