Tornadoes are by no means the biggest killers. The deadliest tornado in world history killed an esitmated 1,300 people. Cyclones are up there, but records indicate that the deadliest natural distasters in world history have been floods and earthquakes. Tropical cyclones, however, can be extremely deadly. They cover large areas and so can affect very large numbers of people. Additionally, their worst impacts are primarily in coastal regions, where populations tend to be concentrated. Furthermore, these cyclones usually impact nations in the tropics, many of which are still underdeveloped, which can lead to lower quality infrastructure, less effective preparation, less effective relief, and poorly buitl houses that are easily destroyed. Tropical cyclones bring a combination of severe coastal flooding from the storm surge and inland flooding from torrential rain.
