Udaipur is also known as "the city of lakes." Since the Udaipur district resides in the state, Rajasthan, which is mostly desert, Udaipur becomes an "oasis" to rest of the area; an "oasis in the desert."

The most famous and beautiful lakes of Udaipur are:

* Lake Pichola * Fateh Sagar Lake * Jaisamand Lake * Udai Sagar Lake * Badi ka Talab

* Doodh Talai * Swaroop Sagar

When Chittor fell to the great Mughal Emperor Akbar, Maharana Udai Singh fled the city and took refuge in the forests of Rajpiplee. Then he traveled to the Girwo valley in the Aravallis. Here he established his new kingdom and founded Udaipur.

Lake Pichola surrounds Lake Palace Hotel and Jag Mandir. It is an artificially, man-made lake that Udai Singh made bigger from a once small stream. He named it Lake Pichola, after the neighboring village of Picholi. It is said to be one of the most picturesque lakes of Udaipur.
