Because... What if everyone used their own foot to measure things? For example: let's say person 1 and person 2 needed to build a house. Person 1 has smaller feet than person 2. And they meausred everything using ther feet. So by the time both houses are done being built, person 1 has a house smaller than person 2 because he measured using his feet. But if they used the same foot (we'll call this person 3) for building their houses, the houses would be equal in size. So now you see that you can't measure everything by your own foot because everyone has different length in feet.
Peoples feet come in various sizes (just look in a shoe shop) and thus if we each measured foot lengths using our own feet we would all come up with different absolute lengths and nothing we wanted to do co-operatively would ever fit together.
Because everybody's feet vary in sizes dumb ask. Yep, not every person has the same size of feet. A baby's feet cannot be as big as his father's, and also, people from different places have different sizes. Most people from the west are bigger and the people from the east are a bit shorter. So it varies on age and the nationality.

The standard is not so standard anymore... 8 foot used to be the norm... I would say 9' is now more common in any homes that are above entry level construction.

A standard pallet is 48" x 40" . You should be able to fit 24 skids in a 48 foot trailer. There are ways to get more.
