Louis XVI attempted to leave France and join the Austrian forces which were attempting to invade. He only got as far as Varennes, where he was stopped and turned back. This attempt at treason eventuaslly resulted in his execution.
He was headed for Montmedy but was arrested at Varennes-en-Argonne.
He didn't escape. He tried to, in his flight to Varennes, but he was caught and recognized as a traitor to the French Revolution. He was guillotined when the French Republic was formed.
