Look at your own neighborhood. That's why police departments/Sheriff departments/etc. were created...they are societies "soldiers" to defend citizens against the enemy (criminals).
Police/Sheriff protects individuals (citizen).
Military protects the whole group (nation).

Because it is interesting and world wars are very important in human history. Also because wars are the foundations for change and everyone should know at least a small amount of war history.
When human nature changes, so will war.
I don't think there is a specific major in war studies, but you can major in history or something related to history. War and history are all linked, so I think that is why there is not a separate study for war studies.
