Because heavy water is D2O and not H2O; the hydrogen atomic nucleus has only one proton, the deuterium has one proton and one neutron. Consequently the properties of the two isotopes are very different. The deuterated water is more dense than the normal water (1,1056 g/cm3 for D2O and 0,9982 g/cm3 for H2O.

The formula of normal water is H2O, the formula of heavy water is D2O. The atom of hydrogen has only one proton, the atom of deuterium has also a neutron. The mass of deuterium is double compared with the mass of hydrogen. Consequently the density of heavy water is greater.

Water is heavy because it is considered to be a dense liquid. If it were a gas it would be much lighter.

Why do heavy objects sink in water?

Objects sink in water because they are denser than water, not necessarily because they are heavier.

Why is deuterated water heavier than water?

Heavy water (D2O) is water created using the Deuterium isotope of Hydrogen, and is about 11% more dense than normal water but is still physically and chemically very similar to regular H2O. Heavy water is commonly used as a nuclear reactor moderator (slow down the neutrons to sustain the fission reaction). see related link

What makes gasoline heavier than water?

Gasoliner is NOT heavier than water. If you mix the two compounds , then allow them to settle. You will see that gasoline is on top of the water. ; Hence it is lighter (less heavy). Scieintifically, the density of gasoline is less than the density of water.

How is light water light different than heavy water?

Heavy water is heavier than light water because instead of both hydrogen atoms in the molecule being ordinary light hydrogen (H - one proton) one or both hydrogen atoms are heavy hydrogen (D - one proton, one neutron).
