Why is y-chromosome analysis done?

The Y chromosome does not undergo crossing over to any great degree so the genetic material is handed down from generation to generation, save for marker mutations, basically intact. You can follow many generation geographical this way, which is one of the things done with this chromosome that does not recombine.
