He probably feels insecure of his territory and needs to mark it, there are probably some male cats around.
Your cat may have bladder stones (this happened to me) and wants to find a comfortable place to urinate, as the litterbox is obviously less comfortable than a bed.
One of the most common reasons for this sort of behavior is urinary tract infection. It hurts the cat to urinate, the cat associates the hurt with the litter box, and starts trying to find someplace to urinate which makes it not hurt. Please take your cat to the vet and have this checked.
It might be a glitch as it would be unnatural for a cat to be on a litterbox for so long.
When its young, put it in the litterbox.
Get a smaller litterbox

you should teach your cat where its litterbox is
neturer it
It is fairly easy. All you do is slowly place your cat's paws in the litterbox. Move her paws so to act like she is digging in the litter. Do this for a while, and she will begin to use it. Warning: Do not force your cat to come near the box! This will cause her to be scared of it, and will avoid the litterbox. Instead, do it nice and slow and gentle. If she struggles, which she will most likely do, gently but firmly hold onto her legs. Not too rough. If she tries to flee, let her go. Try it again a little later.
