Some chewing is normal for puppies and young dogs. However if the problem is ranging to your walls and furniture, you'll need to teach the dog to live in a crate while you are gone and give it quality attention and exercise when you are home. They are very affectionate and need personal attention, particularly when they are young. It is a rare puppy that can be left alone all day while you are off at work and not have accidents or issues with chewing. Dogs are in need of lots of care and supervision while they are puppies--like 2 years or so, depending on the breed.

Dogs chew things up for a variety of reasons.
If it's a puppy, chewing is a necessity, puppies lose their baby teeth around 4 months old and they are replaced with new permanent teeth.
Puppies should be given plenty of things to chew on and rewarded when they do. With some praise or rewards when they chew on acceptable items they will be less likely to chew on things you don't want chewed up.
In some dogs, chewing may be due to boredom or being left alone. Separation anxiety affects dogs and when left alone they may chew on everything available. These dogs need to be given plenty of exercise as a well exercised dog is less likely to chew your stuff up.
With dogs that continue to chew things while you're away it may be necessary to get some other behavioral training or crate them in your absence.
Chewing helps keep dogs teeth healthier too so by all means, DO let them chew, just let them know with reward and praise what's meant for them to chew and what isn't.
Don't punish dogs for chewing, it's something they have to do, just help them to get it right so your stuff doesn't get wrecked.
On the other side of things, when a dog won't chew or can't eat, it can be signs of ear or mouth problems.
They entertain the dogs so you dont have to 24/7 and a dog chewing up a toy is much better than a dog with no toy chewing up furniture.
Step on the white stuff near the dog
Your dog may be chewing on the stairs because he is teething. If your dog is a puppy this is a likely cause. When you see the dog doing this, say no and give the dog something safe to chew on. Your dog may also be chewing on the stairs because he is bored. Try playing with the dog, and giving him interesting toys to play with.
