In Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, the original creator, Erik is not his birth name, but name he received by given or found by "accident" as Erik himself says in the novel. He was known by Gypsy "le mort vivant" ("the living dead").

The given name Eric is derived from the Old Norse name Eiríkr. meaning "one" or "alone.. The Erik spelling is traditional in Scandinavia. Eric is used in French, and in Germany Erich and Erik are both used.
