Platitudes display no real understanding of a situation and they're a lazy approach to conversation. When a person uses platitudes, they give nothing of themselves in conversation. In fact, platitudes can often be false statements of praise.
Platitudes aren't exciting because the average person wants to hear something genuine, heartfelt, or that has personal meaning from the one who is speaking to us. This tells us that they are engaged in the conversation and that they care enough about us to work hard at understanding us and responding to us appropriately. Platitudes fail in all those categories.
Not only are platitudes not exciting, they're generally not very welcome to the person on the receiving end.
