probably because with so many strings needed in a racquet, the racquet itslef probably couldn't withstand the forces of the tension trying to pull the racquet apart!

and if you made one that didnt collapse itself then it would be too heavy and cumbersome to use with agility on a tennis court! a bit like a lead balloon!!
