Venus has an atmosphere that is mostly carbon dioxide, which allows heat to enter, but not to leave. This is known as the greenhouse effect.

Mercury is too small to have an atmosphere, and thus no greenhouse effect. Even though Mercury is much closer to the Sun, most of the heat radiates back out into space.

Its a good question. Although Mercury is a lot closer to the sun, it has no atmosphere due to its smaller size and proximity to the sun. With a lack of atmosphere, the solar radiation received by the planet Mercury is not so easily retained (the lack of atmosphere on Mercury does not hold in heat from the sun).

Venus on the other hand has a thick atmosphere, mainly of carbon dioxide. This is a greenhouse gas that holds in the heat that is received by the sun, acting like a huge oven. Temperatures on Venus average around 457 degrees Celsius, while surface temperatures on Mercury average around 167 degrees Celsius.

Although Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, it is only the second hottest planet after Venus. Venus gets hotter as the thick carbon Dioxide atmosphere holds the heat more effectively, while Mercury has no atmosphere.

Because Venus(the hottest planet)has lots of hot gases in it where Mercury(the closest planet to the sun)does not.

Mercury is made of rock. Rock does not burn.

Also, Mercury has no atmosphere.

On Earth, the oxygen in our atmosphere is important in burning processes.

What planet is after the sun?

Mercury Kind of tough, since the sun is a star and most would consider it the beginning of our solar system. The closest planet to the Sun however, is Mercury

What planet have the highest average of speed?

If you mean within our Solar System: Mercury, since it is closest to the Sun.

Which planet has the shortest year revolution around the sun?

Since Mercury is the closest planet, it travels around the sun in the shortest amount of time. A year on Mercury equals 88 days.

What planet has the shortest year in the solar system?

Mercury does. It's the planet closest to the sun, so therefore it's orbital rotation around the sun will be the quickest.

Is the planet Mercury the fastest moving planet in the solar system?

Yes! The closer planets are to the sun the faster they go. Since Murcury is closest, it is the fastest.

Which planet would you expect to be the hottest?

I would expect Mercury to be the hottest planet, since it's the closest one to the sun. That's why it's so surprising to learn that Venus is hotter than Mercury.

What planet is closest the sun?

Mercury Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, at an average distance from the Sun of about 58 million kilometers. By comparison, Earth is about 150 million kilometers from the Sun, while Pluto, the furthest planet, averages an enormous 5.9 billion kilometers away! If you were standing on Mercury, the Sun would appear much larger than it does on Earth. And since the Sun-Mercury distance varies so much during Mercury's orbit, the Sun would appear larger at some times than at others.

What is the hottest planet in milky way galaxy?

It is not known, since we don't know all the planets in the galaxy, but in our solar system Mercury is the hottest planet, since it's closest to the sun. The hottest planet in Milky Way would be some planet closest to the biggest and hottest star there is. that is wrong, venus, due to it's hot surface and acid gases and things like that, make it the hottest planet. Mercury has no atmosphere, and Venus has a large CO2 high pressure atmosphere, hence Venus is hotter than Mercury!

What planet is the closest?

If you mean "planet", Venus gets closer than any other planet. However, since the distance to the planets varies, both Mars and Mercury, can sometimes be closer than Venus.

What planet is smaller than mercury?

No known planet is smaller than Mercury since Pluto was reclassified as a Dwarf Planet.

What planet is similar in size to the moon?

if i remember correctly, Pluto was the closest planet to the size of earths moon, but now cause Pluto is so small, it has now been classified as just rock, and not as a planet anymoreMercury

Which planet has 0 moons and orbits the sun very fast?

Mercury. It is the closest planet to the sun and so orbits at the fastest speed and in the shortest time, just 88 days. Venus also has no moons and orbits very quickly, since it is only the second planet out. Not as quickly as mercury though.
