It could be that there isn't enough coolant/water in the system, that there is a leak or blockage somewhere, your water pump is jammed or broken, or that the pump belt (if not on a serpentine belt) is loose. If you do have a serpentine belt, check to see if it has proper tension and is looped around the pump pulley.
repair the leak
check your thermostat, it may be blocked. Your water pump is pulling water from the radiator but none is coming out of the engine so you have a vacuum. This most probably means that you are low on coolant as well.
Should be in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
go buy a Haynes Repair Manual for your car ($15-$20), it will walk you thru it
The 1985 Toyota Corolla has one.
Under the water manifold attached the upper radiator hose.
Follow the top radiator hose down to the water outlet on the engine; the stat is in there.
Bottom of the radiator
It is located on the bottom right hand side of your radiator. It will have a little plastic wingnut looking thing and a hose coming off of it.
