In a somewhat more accurate answer; the moon's orbit is limited to a particular plane, but that plane does not line up perfectly with the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun. It is off by about 5 degrees, which is about 10 times the apparent size of both the sun and the moon as viewed from Earth. This means that most of the time during, the sun, moon, and Earth will not line up perfectly.

The orbit of the moon around Earth is not perfectly aligned with Earth's orbit around the sun; it is tilted about 5 degrees relative to Earth's orbit. As a result, on most full moon and new moon phases the Earth, moon and sun will not form a straight line.

Because the Moon's orbital plane about the Earth isn't precisely in the Earth's orbital plane about the Sun. If it were, then every month there would be both a lunar and solar eclipse. Because they're tilted a little, they only happen about twice a year each on average.

Because the moon and sun don't always line up to create one. The moon can be anywhere around the earth - it's 3 dimensional, not a flat surface where it's either on one side of the earth or the other.

Why are total solar eclipse a rare phenomenon?

On average there are as many solar eclipses as there are lunar ones. But each lunar eclipse can be seen from half the Earth, while a solar eclipse can only be seen from a relatively small strip of the Earth's surface. So in any one place it seems that solar eclipses are rare.

How Many General Types Of Eclipses Are There?

There are two general types of Eclipse. They are Solar(Sun) and Lunar(Moon). Each of these eclipses can then be further classified into Total or Partial. Total is where the obscuring body completely blocks light from the third body. Partial is where the obscuring body only covers part of the third body.

Least common lunar eclipse in North America?

Lunar eclipses are fairly common sights. There are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year.

Are there more solar eclipses or lunar eclipses?

Sometimes there can be more solar eclipses or more lunar eclipses in a given year, but they're pretty even on average. However, because a solar eclipse is only visible along a narrow track on the Earth's surface, whereas a lunar eclipse is visible from anywhere the Moon is visible, it is much more common to SEE a lunar eclipse. ======================================= During the 100 years from 1901 to 2000, there were 228 solar eclipses and 229 lunar ones, for an average rate of about 2.3 of each per year.

In how many years does a full lunar eclipse appear?

There are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. Of the lunar eclipses, about 40% are "total"; the remainder are partial or penumbral. A lunar eclipse is visible from one-half of the Earth's surface. So on average, and weather permitting, you will see a total lunar eclipse about every third year.

What eclipse occurs when the sun moon and earth are align with each other?

Either a solar eclipse or a lunar eclipse, depending on the arrangement of the alignment.

Were there any eclipses in the year 1999?

There are, on average, two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. In 1999, there was an annular solar eclipse on February 16, and a total solar eclipse on August 11. For lunar eclipses, there was a penumbral lunar eclipse on January 21 and a partial lunar eclipse on July 16. You can look up all eclipses from 2000 BC to 3000 AD on the NASA Eclipse web page.

How often can you expect to see an eclipse?

There are generally two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses each year. A lunar eclipse happens when the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon. Each lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night half of the Earth, so on average you will see one lunar eclipse per year, from wherever on Earth that you live. There are also two total solar eclipses per year, but the shadow of the Moon on the Earth is much smaller. So the average person will hardly ever see a solar eclipse, unless you travel to the place where the eclipse will happen. On average, you can expect a solar eclipse to happen where you live once every 58 years. If you would like to see when the next solar eclipse will happen where you live, the link below to the Solar Eclipse Calendar will be useful. To see all solar eclipses in the world, the "World Solar Eclipse" link will give you a map.

Why is the lunar eclipse more frequent than the solar eclipse?

It's not. During the 100 years from 1901 to 2000, there were 228 solar eclipsesand 229 lunar ones ... an average of about 2.3 of each every year.If you stay in one place, though, you see lunar eclipses more frequently. That'sbecause a solar eclipse, when it happens, is visible from only a small area on earth, whereas a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night-time half of the earth.

Is lunar eclipse is more frequent than a solar eclipse?

No. during the 100 years from 1901 to 2000, there were 228 solar eclipses and 229 lunar ones ... an average of about 2.3 of each every year. If you stay in one place, though, you see lunar eclipses more frequently. How many months between each lunar eclipse?

Lunar eclipses are usually either one month apart or five months apart.

What is more common solar eclipse or moon eclipse?

Over a long period of time, there are exactly the same number of each. But if you stay in one place, you'll see more lunar eclipses than solar ones, because a lunar eclipse, when it happens, is visible over a much wider area.
