Water can contain heat or the lack of it better than the air and ground around it. During winter the water will be heated up by the sun, even though it is cold out, and during the summer the water will retain the cold that it has been exposed to overnight.

Why are bodies of water sometimes warmer than the temperature on land?

Water is slower to absorb and release heat than the surrounding area. That is why water is typically cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. A lot of this also depends on the geogrpahy of the area.

Is water warmer or cooler in winter?

It is very hard to change the temperature of the water. The water would be cooler in the summer than the land, since the sun doesn't effect it that much and it's warmer in the winter since the cold doesn't change it that much.

What is moderating effect?

Moderating Effects - effect that large climate over nearby land areas. Winter temperatures are warmer and summer temperatures are warmer and summer temperatures are cooler than areas located away from large water bodies. The result is a small annual temperature range.

What climatic variable causes inner cities cooler winters and warmer summers than cities near water?

Cities are warmer than the areas immediately around them. Water is a great heat sink. Winds going over water can take the warmer air in winter and push it over that nearby land, thus warming the associated land. The reverse happens in summer. The air moving over cooler water is cooled and transfers that cooler air over the downwind land.

Why do places in coastal areas have cooler climate?

Bodies of water have a modifying effect on weather. In the summer, coastal land stays cooler and in the winter, coastal areas stay warmer. This is a result of water's large heat capacity.

A large body of water affects the climate by keeping places near it?

A large body of water affects the climate by keeping surrounding areas warmer in the winter. Conversely, the climate would also be cooler in the summer.

How do large bodies of water influence climate?

Water has a large specific heat. That means that it takes more heat energy to change the temperature of water than it does to change the temp of land; thus places near large bodies of water are warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
