When your standard car is idling, it should be in neutral. If it isn't, that means you are holding the clutch in which will eventually burn it out. Save yourself some time and money and only use the clutch to shift. Otherwise keep it in neutral when you are idling.

Yes, nascar race cars have a reverse. They are standard 4-speed Manual transmissions, in a not-so-standard car. They are anything but standard four-speeds. Everyone uses Jerico transmissions, which are made for ease of changing the gear cluster. If you want a different gear ratio in the car, you open the little door in the floorplan, open the top of the transmission, and do your work. Very simple and direct. They also definitely have reverse.
Common cars can't do highway speeds (65 mph) in first gear and many have rev limiters.
If it is 4WD, put put the transfer case in Neutral, leave the automatic in Park or standard trans in gear. If it is 2WD, automatic would have to have driveshaft disconnect, standard trans just put in Neutral.
