Because once you grade up, it gets harder, and some of the questions may seem to look like high school work, which may lead to depression. It's easy to prevent depression. Just give your kids a bit easier work. Most people that have depression because of school, may get bad grades, and get in trouble a lot, and that could cause suicide.

Don't be depressed, ask your teacher!

I don't agree with the above answer especially for college and university students. (While I know they're not the same, in my answer I will be using college and university interchangeably.) A professor who makes the work easier for a college student does him or her a disservice because the point of going to college is to learn to do the work you're going to do for your career. Your employers won't make the work easier for you and neither should your professor. (Even if it is just a core class like English, Math, History, etc.) Also, when I say "depression" don't mean feeling sad for a little while. I mean being down for weeks, months at a time. (see: Major Depression)

School may cause depression in young people, particularly college students, because of the stress of getting ready to work in your field. You're competing with people across the country to work in your career and the less ready you feel the more stressful you are. You could be getting good grades, but a lot of employers don't look at your grades ESPECIALLY if you're going into arts and entertainment. Not to say getting good grades in arts and entertainment isn't important, because a lot of time if someone gets a good grade in a class it means they understand better than the person that got the lower grade (unless your professor absolutely deplores you and it even takes a while to get there with a teacher even if you're working with the most impatient teacher in the world). However theory and book smarts mean nothing if you suck when you put it to practice. (Again this is ESPECIALLY true for students going to school for arts and entertainment)

Also, students can become depressed because they wanted to graduate with honors but their grades won't allow them to. They may be depressed because of the social life on campus. They could be depressed because they're not getting decent internships. They could be depressed because they're not meeting their self imposed goals for when they graduate or continue on to graduate school.

The unfortunate thing about being depressed about college is it starts ugly cycles. (1) Depression makes students feel very sad and that can take a toll on their social life. However if they're longing for social interaction they can't do it if they're depressed and that causes more depression. (2) Depression makes it hard for students to enjoy what they love. Students who once were in love with their major may find themselves feeling apathetic about it when they're depressed. The excitement and adventure isn't there anymore because of the depression (3) Depression can cause students to have trouble getting to sleep or sleep too much. Therefore that can take a tool in classes, especially classes were the professor does not assign a book or teach out of the assigned book and the student must take notes to pass the class. (4) It's common for students to feel as if they're worthless when they're depressed. Lack of confidence can lead to doing poorly inside and outside of the classroom. By outside the classroom I mean in major related campus clubs that allows them to produce work they can put on their resumes/portfolios/reels. Also, lack of confidence can negatively effect a student's social life. (5) Depression causes students to have poor concentration and have trouble making decisions. The former is very self explanatory. As for the latter, let say the student was a leader of a group for project and wanted to make sure s/he made good decisions for the group. If this person is depressed this person will frequently try to have their decisions validated by others. If their decisions are not validated by others they will either take forever to make a decision or be very insecure about the decision they make. When explaining the decision they might say something like, "yeah, well I'm not entirely sure. I could be wrong. What do you think," sometimes even if they know or figure they're right. (6) Lastly depression can cause suicidal thoughts in a student. It's hard to be depressed over school work because many people don't understand that type of depression. Most people figure if a student is depressed about something s/he can can control, like grades, social life, or a budding career, that student is just whining. However, depression should never be taken lightly and even though it may not be a big deal to people on the outside looking in, it's a big deal to the student. Many schools provide mental health services on campus. Usually these services are included in the student's tuition. (If you are considering talking to your school's mental health professionals I suggest going in with an idea of what to expect. Look up what to expect when talking to or seeing a psychologist. You may want to start with smaller issues with your psychologist just to see how s/he deals with you and your issues. Also, this is a great way to see if you feel comfortable with your psychologist.)
