The metric system is used the world over, feet and inches are only used in a few sleepy backwaters.
Mainly to use an accepted standard (scientists all over the world use the same units). Also, it is easier to do calculations in metric units.
I was taught the imperial system whilst a schoolboy in the UK, many years ago. So I prefer imperial rather than metric. But, as metric is becoming the norm, I have become familiar with both systems.
