There can be many reasons for this, if there are other cats in the house they might be marking "their" area in which that is a big problem. The cat may have a urinary problem, they may not be able to control it sometimes (I've had a cat like that--the medication he was on would cause him to have an accident...very rare occasions). Also, there may be some other medical problems going on, seeing a vet if the problem keeps occurring may be the best solution that way your cat can stay healthy.
