Why must Harry Potter Ron and Hermione wear that depressing necklace in the Deathly Hallows book?

Harry, Ron and Hermione had to protect the Horcrux from being stolen, so they had to wear it, giving them a negative feeling while it's worn. Also, this is what caused Ron to have a row with Harry and leave. When he took the necklace off, he immediately wanted to go back, but couldn't because he was too far already.
It was a plot device... they should have put it into a backpack.
