Harry, Ron and Hermione had to protect the Horcrux from being stolen, so they had to wear it, giving them a negative feeling while it's worn. Also, this is what caused Ron to have a row with Harry and leave. When he took the necklace off, he immediately wanted to go back, but couldn't because he was too far already.

It was a plot device... they should have put it into a backpack.
