An insightful question. In the northern hemisphere, the gnomon on a sundial will have its shadow travel around the face, and in a clockwise direction!
In the Southern Hemisphere the travel will be anticlockwise.
But the Northern guys got there first, hence clockwise.
[Likewise, the northern guys named their pole North, and that settled that issue!]
Even arbitrary can sometimes have logic behind it.
counterclockwise
The word anticlockwise, can be seen from the prefix anti which literally means against. For example in a clock a clockwise direction moves or proceeds to the same direction for example in trigonometric ratios or the wall clock. This means anti clock wise is proceeding to the direction or the opposite direction.
Turning something 'clockwise' would be turning it in the direction the hands on a clock turns. 'Counter-clockwise' would be turning it the opposite direction of a clock. I always remember anti-clockwise from clockwise, by which way a clock turns for clockwise, and the opposite way of a clock turning for anti-clockwise.
1342 in an anti clock direction.
Seeing from the top when the tap is turned clockwise it gets closed and water stops. And vise a versa.
Because if it did, it wouldn't be anti-clockwise anymore.
Anti clockwise means to the left. clockwise goes to the right. if you get stuck look at a clock. the hand pointing left is anti clockwise. Go to the right it's clockwise.

anti clock wise
Anti-Clock was created in 1979.
Clockwise is the direction in which the hands of a clock move, going from the top to the right, then down, left, and back up. It is also described as the direction that is considered to be "rightward" of a circle or circular shape.
It is the same as counter clock wise. The hands on a clock, starting from a position at the top of the clock-face, move in a circle to the right, so counter clock wise would be moving to the left, in the opposite direction.
