Generally speaking, a "law" is a rule that is enforced by the Courts.

Another View: There is an accepted definition of The Law:

"Rules established by a governing authority to institute and maintain orderly coexistence."

Add'l note: Laws are not enforced by the courts. They are passed by the Legislative Branch - Enforced by the Executive Branch - and adjudicated by the Judicial Branch.
