Actually the news says that the U.S. government is thinking about superheating the air using mirrors around the Mojave Desert to about 800 degrees and then absorbing the solar energy using solar panels. The problem with this is that environmentalists don't like this idea - not because it helps the earth of course - because using solar panels in the desert can destroy the land because people will be ripping up land to install the panels and wiring needed to create this solar system. As the article said they are "killing the land to save the land."
