Best Answer

A gasoline injects fuel into the cylinder as it is filled with air, compresses it, then ignites the spark plug to trigger the power stroke.

In a diesel engine air is compressed up to 3 times more causing a much higher cylinder temp. Once the air in the cylinder is hot diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinder and is ignited by the high temperature.

How is the engine ignited?

A petrol engine is ignited by a spark plug, and a diesel engine is ignited by the heat produced from the air/ fuel mixture being compressed in the cylinder

Why petrol engine is called spark ignition engine?

Because the fuel is ignited by a spark plug rather than by compression as is the case with a diesel.

Is there any vehicle which can run on both petrol and diesel?

A vehical that runs on petrol and diesel is impossible as they are both ignited in different ways. For exaple petrol is ignited by the spark plugs and a diesel is ignited by the shear force of the compression from the pistons. A petrol engine has a round 9:1 compression ratio and a diesel has about 20:1 but these veary from engine to engine I hope that hasn't lost you

What happens when diesel fuel is placed in a gasoline tractor engine?

It won't run, that's for sure. Diesel is ignited by compression pressure, not by spark. And the compression in a gasoline engine is not sufficient to ignite the diesel.

What is the difference between petrol power vehicle and diesel powered vehicle?

a petrol engine uses petrol which is highly combustable, so it can be ignited by a spark. that is why petrol engines have spark plugs. diesel is an oil based fuel, and takes higher temperatures to ignite, it cannot be as easily ignited by a spark and sometimes cant at all, so diesel engines have no spark plugs and the fuel is ignited under extreme heat due to pressure.

What is difference between a diesel and petrol engine?

Basically diesel engines are much higher compression giving them more torque also the fuel is ignited by compression not a spark like in a gas engine

How is diesel fuel ignited in a warm diesel engine?

Compression.

Why gasoline is not used in diesel engines?

Gasoline does not combust properly, or at all, in a compression ignition engine. Gasoline is designed to be ignited by a spark.

What if the glow plugs misfire?

glow plugs do not fire glow plugs are used to heat the chamber where the diesel ignites diesel is not ignited by a spark diesel is ignited thru compression

Are spark plugs used in diesel engines?

NO, fuel is ignited by compression.

In what type of engine is the air-and-fuel mixture ignited by the heat created during the compression stage rather than by a spark plug?

Diesel

Why is diesel is not used in petrol engines?

Because diesel is ignited of heat and high high compresion not a spark on lower compresion petrol engine. If you use diesel in a petrol you will end up with your engine knocking and pre-detonation followed by your engine blowing up pretty bad.
