It is not clear as to what you mean by 'craze', but Opera is as popular now as it ever was, especially with recordings etc. Factually more people than ever have access to opera since the advent of the LP. Before that the only way to hear [see] a complete opera was to go and see it - that was expensive as was the purchase of 'complete' recordings on old 78's. So really a full opera was the domain of the 'well off'.
