Why other mammals evolved into many different forms when dinosaurs became extinct?

For one thing, dinos aren't mammals, so it's completely different. I believe that the dinosaurs may have just been too big to cope with the major environmental changes at the time, and mammals, being smaller and somewhat under-developed, adapted more easily. That's just a personal theory, though
