Protozoan (protista) are prokaryotes. They do not have membrane organelles such as the nucleus. Eukaryotes (plants, animals, fungi) do have the membrane bound organelles including the nucleus. Pro-means before, -kary- means "nut" (nucleus). Prokaryotes are earlier forms of life (before the "nut"). Eu- means new so a "new nut" (nucleus).
