very few gases actually smell of anything, i believe that only the halogens (group (1)7) smell of anything, and they are the only pure elements that have a gaseous colour.
To answer your question, noone actually knows why oxygen(or any other gas like it) is odourless and colourless. its one of lifes mysteries
