Cryogenics, or the freezing of biological material, has many purposes. Researchers periodically freeze the cell cultures they are working with in order to have a "backup" in case something happens to the rest of their cells, such as contamination. Clinically, cryogenics is used to preserve sperm or egg cells for fertility treatment. Cord blood collected at the time of birth can also be preserved so that if the infant later develops serious disease or injury, future stem cell treatments can use these cells. There are many more examples. Essentially though, cryogenics is useful in any situation where the preservation of living cells for many years is required.
