They were killed, because of their fur which was used to make many things. It was a horrible thing, and the koala population decreased heavily because of it. Although the koala population decreared heavily koalas are still not endangered just very close to it.

Koalas are not bears. Koalas are not hunted, they are protected by the law.

The koala was hunted for its fur for the British and US markets, but US President Herbert Hoover banned the importing of koala fur and the trade died off.

By the late 19th century, 30,000 furs annually were being exported to Britain alone. The record was in 1889 when an estimated 300,000 furs were exported.

Koalas are not being poached. During the late 1800's, koalas became an export commodity for their fur, mostly for export to the USA. Due to koala numbers dwindling and public outrage, laws were enacted protecting the koala and imports were banned by the USA in the late 1920's. The koala is not endangered. They are considered to be "Secure".
