Dimitri Mendeleev is credited with the the creation of the first modern and rational periodic table of chemical elements; but other chemists also had contributions.
Hydrogen's position in the modern periodic table is often viewed as problematic because it shares characteristics with both alkali metals and halogens. While it has one electron in its outer shell, similar to alkali metals, it also readily forms compounds like halogens, indicating it can gain an electron. Additionally, hydrogen exists as a diatomic molecule (Hâ‚‚) and can exhibit unique properties that do not align perfectly with any single group. This dual behavior complicates its classification, leading to ongoing debates about its appropriate placement.
As with all alkali metals, hydrogen has one electron in its outermost shell.
The electron configuration of hydrogen is similar with that of alkali metals.
Hydrogen is placed at the top of the modern periodic table because it has unique properties that do not fit neatly into any specific group. It can behave like a metal or a non-metal depending on the conditions, making it difficult to assign it to a specific group in the table. Additionally, hydrogen is the lightest element, consisting of only one proton and one electron.
It is placed in group 1, period 1 on the modern periodic table
Even though hydrogen has a vacant electron in its outer shell, like many of the elements in group 1 of the periodic table, it has unusual properties, e.g. it is a gas at room temperature, whereas the other elements are all solid. As a result, some forms of the periodic table show hydrogen above the rest in the table, in its own special place. However, it is still in group 1
1. The wrong placing of the element Hydrogen in the periodic table. It should be placed on the right side of the periodic table, on the group of non-metals because Hydrogen is a non-metal element but in the periodic table it is placed on metals element .
Hydrogen posses properties of alkali metals while it also posses properties of halogens .That is why it cannot be placed in any of the either groups ,so it has been given a distinct place in modern periodic table. NOTE Hydrogen does not belong to group 1
Hydrogen is the first chemical element in the Periodic Table of Mendeleev.
