Proverbs are designed to make us think, provide a warning or teach a point that we can benefit from and apply in our lives, to make us better people.

In The Bible, King Solomon, who was known for his wisdom, could speak 3,000 proverbs and he recorded many of these proverbial sayings.-1Kings 4:32

BIBLICAL Proverbs are expressions that carry power, and because they were inspired of God, ANYone reading them will benefit by applying their council. (2 Timothy 3:14-17)

They can make us 'wise for salvation'. Though sometimes it's helpful to understand the culture in which they were written, Biblical Proverbs apply to anyone, anywhere, because they are written for ALL human beings, not for any one culture. They are nuggets of wisdom from God, tied up in neat little packages, and ready to use. For instance, here are just a few:

(Proverbs 1:5) "A wise person will listen and take in more instruction, and a man of understanding is the one who acquires skillful direction. . ." Here it points out that humility and the ability to listen is vitally important in life...infact, if it's a WISE person who will listen, conversly it's a FOOLISH one who won't. So, if we applied JUST this one proverb in our lives, how much wiser we could become. (Prov 1:7)(Prov 2:1-9)(Prov 12:15)

(Proverbs 1:22-33)"How long will YOU inexperienced ones keep loving inexperience, and [how long] must YOU ridiculers desire for yourselves outright ridicule, and [how long] will YOU stupid ones keep hating knowledge? .... As for the one listening to me, he will reside in security and be undisturbed from dread of calamity." This is a plea from the creator asking all people to listen to what he is saying, search for him, study his word, and make application of what they learn in their lives, and their future will be a bright one.(Psalms 37:11,29)(Matthew 7:21-23)

(Proverbs 10:4) " The one working with a slack hand will be of little means, but the hand of the diligent one is what will make one rich." Don't be lazy. Work hard! This is good advice for ANYone.(Proverbs 10:26)

(Proverbs 10:12)"Hatred is what stirs up contentions, but love covers over even all transgressions. . ." How much more peaceful would many situations be if everyone applied this proverb?

(Proverbs 10:19) "In the abundance of words there does not fail to be transgression, but the one keeping his lips in check is acting discreetly." Proverbs 12:18 "There exists the one speaking thoughtlessly as with the stabs of a sword, but the tongue of the wise ones is a healing". How much damage is caused by words spoken without thinking. We need to talk less, listen more and THINK before speaking.

(Proverbs 11:2) "Has presumptuousness come? Then dishonor will come; but wisdom is with the modest ones. . ."Prideful ones who feel they're better than other people often fall in a big way, but those who are humble enough to know their limitations will act wisely.(Proverbs 13:10)

(Proverbs 11:22) "As a gold nose ring in the snout of a pig, so is a woman that is pretty but that is turning away from sensibleness" No matter how physically attractive, a senseless person can appear quite unattractive.

(Proverbs 13:24)"The one holding back his rod is hating his son, but the one loving him is he that does look for him with discipline." Interesting in today's atmosphere of permisiveness....the Bible tells us that we are HATING our children if we do not discipline them. This doesn't mean physical beatings, but rather direction and correction, boundries and respect. These things produce respectful and confident young ones.

(Proverbs 14:12) "There exists a way that is upright before a man, but the ways of death are the end of it afterward" Just because something APPEARS to be right in our eyes, doesn't make it so. Take time to check things out carefully, especially in spiritual matters. Compare what your learning to God's Word.(Proverbs 14:15) "Anyone inexperienced puts faith in every word, but the shrewd one considers his steps." Don't be gullable. Check things out.

(Proverbs 15:1) "An answer, when mild, turns away rage, but a word causing pain makes anger to come up". When facing a tense situation, calm words can turn things around. Slow down, think before speaking.(Proverbs 15:2) The tongue of wise ones does good with knowledge, but the mouth of the stupid ones bubbles forth with foolishness. . .

And there are SO many more.....
