Usually substances that are pure. For example water has a more well defined melting temp. than soda. (FYI- i totally just guessed- no research whats so ever. not at all!)

Do pure substances have a fixed boiling and melting point?

yes they have

How could the identify of a compound be established by melting point?

Pure substances have very specific melting (and boiling) points. Assuming the substance is pure you could measure the melting point and compare it to a known database of melting points.

Describe what a pure material or substance is?

These are substances that contain only one type of atoms/molecules. For example, diamond is a pure substance. Diamonds are made of strictly carbon atoms. Melting points and Boiling points of pure substances always remain constant !

What is the melting point of a battery?

Melting points are of pure substances, not of objects made out of many, many substances. Eg. A news paper or an aeroplain don't have a melting point. Neither do batteries. But be carefull in warming them up above 50oC !!

What are the characteristic of pure substances?

The characteristics of pure substances are:fixed melting pointfixed boiling pointsfixed valencyfixed densitystability

For what two purposes are melting points routinely used?

- melting point is a specific characteristic of a substance; consequently we can distinguish these substances knowing the melting point - the knowledge of the melting point is absolutely necessary to design technological processes, to made alloy, to use surely materials at high temperature, etc.

Why do mixtures not have sharp melting points and boiling points?

Because they are not pure compounds !

Why do impurities lower the boiling point of a pure substance?

The presence of the impurities will cause the boiling points to rise (also the melting points to fall). When you add the impurities, the substance doesn't remain pure affecting the boiling point to increase because now, more energy is required to boil the liquid with impurities. The melting points fall because impure substances require less energy to separate the particles.

Explain why the boiling point and the melting point can be used to help identify substances?

100 degrees mate. 100 degrees Celsius is the boiling point for pure water at 1atm or sea level. The boiling point is useful in identifying chemical compounds. Chemical compounds have different boiling points that are specific to it' s chemical composition. If you know what the boiling point or melting point is you can also tell if your compound is pure, as any impurities will change these.

How a termometer can be used to check the purity of a metal?

because gold or iron are metal if they are not a metal so they can not check the purity but they are metals..

How are the melting points of alloys different from those of the pure metals?

Each material has specific melting point; and an alloy is not a single element.

What is the difference between the melting points of the pure aspirin and the aspirin that prepared in lab?

Depends on how well you prepared it. More impurities equal a lower melting point than something pure.
